ARIES Explained: The New UK Standard for Accident Repair Sustainability
What is ARIES?
The ARIES accident repair industry standard is a UK environmental framework designed to help the vehicle repair sector measure, reduce, and report its carbon emissions and improve sustainability. Created by industry stakeholders, it will replace the expiring PAS 2060 standard at the end of 2025.
Key features of the ARIES standard
ARIES provides a structured, multi-level approach for bodyshops of all sizes to address their environmental impact using 3 core steps:
Measure: Capture carbon dioxide emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3) at the repair level using a standardised reporting framework.
Reduce: Focus on practical carbon reduction initiatives, prioritising operational efficiency, supply chain engagement, and waste management. It emphasises internal reductions over carbon offsetting.
Verify: Ensures credibility through independent, third-party audits to verify compliance and track progress.
Why ARIES was developed?
Replaces PAS 2060: ARIES was created in response to the phasing out of PAS 2060, the previous carbon neutrality standard for the automotive industry.
Industry-specific: Unlike generic environmental standards, ARIES is tailored to the specific challenges of the vehicle repair sector, such as energy-intensive spray booths and complex supply chains.
Industry collaboration: The standard was developed by a working group of key industry players, including insurers, manufacturers, and repairers, to ensure it is practical and relevant.
Benefits for repairers
Cost savings: Increasing energy efficiency and improving waste management can lead to reduced operational costs over time.
Insurance partnerships: Adopting ARIES can give repairers preferred status with insurers and fleet operators who endorse the standard. A support fee is also paid by insurers for each repair job.
Clear pathway: The multi-level framework provides a clear and accessible path to sustainability for businesses of all sizes.
Enhanced reputation: Certification provides an accredited mark to demonstrate environmental leadership to customers and business partners.
